“Never for the sake of peace and quiet deny your own experience or convictions.” -Dag Hammarskjold
The Communist Party of Czechoslovakia began its rule in February of 1948. This began an oppressive rule over the country that would span four decades. That is until, 1989. The Communist Party finally stepped down, the borders of neighboring countries were once reopened and the rebel leader and human rights activist Vaclav Havel was elected President. This wasn’t the end of conflict for Czechoslovakia, but it was a huge victory in the battle for independence and a grand step in the right direction toward becoming what we know today as The Czech Republic. So who did this? Who made it all finally come to an end? Who fought the good fight and who won the battle over this giant force? Students and artists. In what is now seen as one of the greatest peaceful demonstrations of all time, the students and artists of Czechoslovakia rose up in peaceful protest and used their talents, abilities and influence to bring down Communist rule in what is now known as The Velvet Revolution.
Now I’m sorry, but if a bunch of normal joes, people just like you and I, could overthrow a government without lifting a gun or detonating a bomb, then why is it that we can’t make big things happen too?
I am not suggesting we overthrow any governments. But when you think about your goals and your God-given missions for your life, don’t they now seem small in comparison? That pile of laundry on the floor doesn’t seem so big now does it? I am currently absolutely drowning in my to do lists. I am so overwhelmed I don’t even know where to start, but in the grand scheme of life, my to do list is nothing.
At MTH2011, they called me The Volcano. Everyone in the room noticed my quiet demeanor, but all recognized that I probably had a lot to say under my shy exterior. They are right. So despite my old habits, my to do list and my physically quiet and often hard-to-understand voice, I am not going to be quiet anymore. I am now aware, that everything I create, everything you create could start a revolution. We all have something important to say, and we includes me. What would happen if we all just stopped trying to be quiet and just went for it? This is me, going for it.
