I can’t believe it’s time for another year in review post, I feel like I just did this! I wanted to take a moment to thank you all for a very exciting year for Suburbanite Photography! This time of year is always a time to reflect on the year and edit our aspirations in preparation for a new one. I thought I’d remind myself visually of how far I’ve come in this last year with an infographic. While these numbers and stats are extremely modest compared to probably every other photographer around, I’m proud of them. This is my first year being in full-time business, and truthfully I only spent about half of this year that way, so I’m quite impressed with what I was able to accomplish. Perhaps it’s a bit conceited to be giving myself a pat on the back in this way, but I’m realizing more and more the importance of self praise. It’s easy to get down on yourself when you don’t meet your own or others’ expectations, but what if we all took a moment to think about the good things we did, the strides we took and the progress we made rather than constantly focusing on where we fell short?

“How do you learn to trust your gut?  You walk.  Walk the walk and embody the talk.  It feels awkward at first… to step into a new life.  Stepping on new ground. Terra incognita.  Put one foot in front of the other and act with integrity.  Fall down.  Get up.  Fall down again.  You will get up stronger.  Before you know it, falling doesn’t sting like it used to and you have built new confidence, momentum and… you have changed…”

“…You were given gifts that were meant to be shown to the world.  Walk.  Act as if you already own the life you desire.  Walk in those shoes.  Soon, they will be come second-skin.  How do you start a business/rebuild a powerful thriving business?  How do you get out of “overwhelmed” and start really living?  You walk.  Sometimes through mud, jagged rocks, thick weeds, thorns and on thin ice.  But, you will get to the other side because you are walking through it.  You get stronger.  But, if you do not walk, you will not get to the other side.  Step strongly.  No mistakes, only lessons.  Plant those feet on the ground.  You have this.  Walk.”

So that’s my two cents for 2012. I didn’t move mountains in 2011, I didn’t alter the alignment of the stars or singlehandedly turn the world economy around, but I didn’t let the fact that I couldn’t do those things sway me from doing the things I could do. So my hope for myself and all of you in 2012 is that you are able to jump foolishly head first, eyes wide, brain spinning into something that you “can’t do” and begin the process of moving mountains one step at a time.
